It's All Gone!!!

It's All Gone........ sale_street_shot.jpg

I made a decision about a year ago to try to become a minimalist.  I believe I have finally championed my goal. A couple months ago I had a epiphany ....I thought  I don't need all of this stuff that I had and since I have committed the next 7 years to walking ....If I couldn't fit it on my back then I didn't need it anymore. So a couple of weekends ago I had an "everything I own" sale. It was my in my head that I would sell everything..I mean everything with exception of a few boxes of memories and my car (I still need to get to work) So I went for it.

It was over Labor day weekend. I had been packing everything and friends were helping me price things  a few days previous to the weekend. I had no clue what I was doing, I have never done a garage sale before nor have many of the friends that were helping me. But after three days of sorting and pricing my life possessions I finally had a room full of in essence my life. There is all was:

  • Bed
  • Dresser
  • Fridges
  • Library
  • Clothes
  • TV
  • Surround Sound
  • Kickboxing gym
  • Jewelry
  • Appliances
  • Everything

I was ready.

I needed a place to have my sale so I had asked one of my friends (Gail K.) if I could have it at her house for it was a great location.  I had everything in place:

  • Posted ad in paper....Check
  • Priced and sorted everything......Check
  • Made signs for Community.....Check
  • Tracked down Truck and Trailer....Check
  • Help in moving......Check
  • Get Change.....Check

I had asked people who have done this thing before and asked what they think I would make....They thought I would make about $600... My goal far exceeded that number. I knew that I needed more for my sale than what I had so I had asked people to donate anything that they didn't want anymore. I had a few people who helped.  (Thank you if you were one of those)

The sale was going to be 3 days long and it was my goal to go home with absolutely nothing. The three days were crazy.... The first day was the most insane ...from 7:30 until 4:45 I only had a 10 minute break from people. There had to be an average of 3 people always there all day.. I was making deals left and right.. It all went so fast.... I felt like a used car salesman. Everyone was trying to offer me less than I wanted... I had anticipated that so I asked more up front in order to get want I wanted in the first place. It worked out in the end... Everyone walked away with a deal!  The second day the sale felt like a ghost town compared to day one.  I have come to the conclusion that there are a group of seasoned veteran garage salers that come on the first day and then again on the last day 1 hour before the sale ends to get the stuff for dirt cheap.

It was still in the back of my head to get rid of everything the last day so I was telling people to come back on Monday and I would basically give it away. On the Last day I sold my whole library for $125 dollars (That is about 9 boxes of books) I also sold the rest of the clothes for $4 dollars (that was about nine boxes of clothes)... they barely all fit into the back of their SUV. sale_10_close_up.jpg

Then with about a hour left I took what was remaining and took a sign and wrote...everything $10. TO my surprise I found a couple of ladies that took the rest for $10. The only thing that they didn't want was the Christmas tree that is still in the back of my car. Anyone want a Christmas tree? Free delivery!

And there we have it...I am sleeping on my Thermarest mattress now, No radio, no TV. I am writing this right now on a borrowed computer and I can literally fit everything I own in the back of my Honda Civic Hatchback!  You might think I am crazy.. But here is the way I see it. If I have to sell everything that I own in order for others to live then it is worth the price of admission.

And no...I am not going let this end without telling you how much I made from the sale. I made $2,400 total.  This allows me to pay off remainder  of my school loans so that I may start in March and start raising support for Bloodwatermission.com!      Thanks for following.

A Week in The Wilderness

A Week in the Wilderness:Wheart_Stoic.JPG

I haven’t taken a shower in a week, there was a fire ban, bear poles, it was cold, it rained, and I had the time of my life! Beginning last week six of us guys met here at the church to pack for the 6 day Wilderness Leadership Adventure that would lead us to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan in the Porcupine Mountain Wilderness State Park .

Most people wouldn’t consider what we do fun but the group that we had were definitely the opposite of most people. We enjoy memories over comfort and that is definitely what we walked away with.  To compress the week into a couple of paragraphs  will be hard but I will do my best.

As the alarm rang on my phone at 4:45 am I proceeded to wake up the guys.  I didn’t have to wake some of them up for they thought it would be fun to stay up all night. So after I rounded everyone up we headed out to the van where we would drive the 7 hour trip up to the U.P.

waterslide.JPGWe arrive and to my surprise there is a fee for backcountry camping (I could have swore I read it was free) none-the-less I paid the $140 charge only to then be told that there was a fire ban that started that day…Great… No fires…. It is cold….and all I have is one MSR backpackers stove and 1 fuel bottle for 6 days and 6 guys to cook for. I was thinking…this should be interesting.

The Trip was a leadership trip where each person was the leader for the day. Each day was filled with 6-10 miles of hiking with about a 40 pound pack on their back.  A feat that would test the perseverance of any high school guy. I have to say I am very impressed. Other than practicing up on knife throwing skills, polar bear plunges in Lake Superior , and light art (see pics) they championed the art of “Leave No Trace” outdoor ethics as well as leading each other mentally, physically, and spiritually through the 35 miles of hiking. We just made it with the fuel we had and with 3 injuries, athletes foot, 8 blisters, many cuts, bruises, and a stench that would rival hogs we emerged from the wilderness better men.

As for me I got a taste of what like is going to be like for the next 7 years of my life.  The reality for me is that it is a lot of fun right now dreaming, training, and searching for potential sponsors but when it comes down to it 7 years is a long time. But without sacrifice comes no victory.  Living life to the Fullest, Daren
