Pearisburg, VA

Hey Guys and gals… I finally found some free WIFI… I am in the bottom of an apartment building sitting on top of a washing machine.  Hey… you get it where you can!

I am doing well… My feet are not in good shape at the moment.. . The last couple of days it got really cold and there was like 3 days of straight rain…. My shoes got wet and there was no sun to dry them out. So I ended up walking 32 miles into town just so I didn’t have to stay another night out in the rain. I am in Pearisburg, VA. at a Church hostel. The place is pretty cool. I ended up having coffee with the priest the next morning which was interesting. None the less I have taken a couple of “0” days to let my blisters and cuts heal up. I am feeling better today but I know that tomorrow when my friend “Peak Axe” and I head out my blisters will be a constant reminder that I am still alive! Hey….  You take the good with the bad , suck it up, and move forward!  Not to mention take an Advil or 4.

Today was good… Peak Axe and I haven’t seen a movie in a long while so we hitched the 25 miles to Blacksburg to try to catch one and hit the outfitters. The guy who picked us up happens to be a lawyer and took us out to lunch and then back to Pearisburg.  It was quite the culture shock… that may sound weird but I felt like I have been in prison or something…everything felt foreign to me. I almost got hit by a couple of cars walking across the street because I was not used to them… I was all disoriented!

I went through my first pair of shoes! I was kind of excited about that… Merrell sent me out another pair already!  Thank you guys! I also received a custom hip belt from Kelty!  Thank you guys! My sponsors are too good to me!

I also want to thank those who have sent me care packages! Some people have asked how to get packages to me and what to put in them. I am in the middle of creating a list of all of those things. I will post all of the details in the next blog.

Well there is a lot more going on but it is 10:00 and I need to get to sleep…. It is an hour past Hikers Midnight!

Thanks for the encouragement my friends. Take care and find your Life to the Fullest!   Daren (Vagabond)

Day 41: The Earth Expedition

Day 41: The Earth Expedition

40 Mile Challenge:  Yesterday I set a personal record of 42 miles in 17 ½ hours.  Three other hikers (Recycled, Beans, and Peak Axe) got together and decided to walk the 42 mile hike from Waukeaga Lake to Damascus. We decided to coin the Challenge the "WD 40" (Waukeaga -Damascus: 40miles). We started at 3:00 pm on the 17th and walked through the night with headlamps and arrived in Damascus, VA at 8:30 AM the next morning. We figured out that we travelled a total of 2% of the entire Appalachian Trail during the hike.  How do I feel?  Let's just say it is not a record that I want to beat anytime soon!

Miles walked to date: 500 miles vendetter.jpg

Video Blog: One of my good friends Amie put this together! Check it out if you want a different perspective of the expedition!  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fEdP02x26wg

Feet: I get a lot of question about how my feet are doing.... I got my first blister last week...I descended 3,400 feet and my shoes were not tied tight enough so it was my own fault. Other than that I have lost complete feeling on the outside of both of my big toes. This happened when I took my Transamerican journey in 2005 and the feeling came back in a couple of months. I don't think this will be the case this time. Does anyone have any expertise in this area?

Book I am Reading: Wild at Heart (Aldridge)

I am having the time of my life.... !  I crossed another state line coming into Damascus... I have a sense of nostalgia being here... The Transamerican trail runs through  Damascus... so I have been here before back in "05" when I rode the Coast to Coast bicycle trail. I am staying at the same $4 dollar hostel I stayed at and I am sitting at the same table I played monopoly with A.T. hiker 3 years ago. It is good to be here.

I have been reading the book Wild at Heart the last couple of weeks thanks to trail angels Hercules and F.A.L. ....the book unwraps the idea that men were created with passions that are imprinted in our D.N.A. It shares that these three strands that are intertwined into the male soul in my own paraphrased words are living an adventure, a battle to fight, and the pursuit of a beauty.  The reason that I can write "Life to the Fullest" at the end of every Blog  I write is because I feel that I have found the reason I was created.  As unorthodox as it may sound...a walk around the world (adventure to live) to save lives in Africa (Battle to Fight) is my "Life to the Fullest" How do I know?  Some things you just know and no matter how many words you put to it you will never be able to capture the feeling. I guess the litmus test that I put to the test is "Can I imagine myself doing anything else?" If you can...then I would venture to say that you have passions yet to be explored. I personally believe that those passions are the birth place for the discovery of the reason that you walk this spinning ball of dust. To not investigate would be a slap in your creators face.  Strong statement...perhaps but just because the reason that it may stir strong emotion is because you know your adventure to live, (Dream) and have suppressed it to just that...something that you will never be able to attain.  One of my greatest fears is to look back on my life from my death bed and wish I would have lived life differently. "All Men Die...Few Men Really Live" (Braveheart) Ok... I relent...now

Recycled.jpgA friend (Recycled) after a day of hiking in the sun tries to dry the sweat off his shirt over the fire....or what I like to call "Cowboy Television"

I have so many stories that I have already filled a leather bound journal up front and back. I wish I had time to write all of them down but unfortunately I don't. I guess you will just have to wait for the book!

Are you really going to publish your journals? That would be so awesome! Let me just tell you that i am so jealous that you have found your passion. That is a huge thing many people live there whole lives to find, but i truly believe that God is not going to be done with you after your Expedition. He is going to use you in ways you could never imagin. So get ready and wait and see the amazing things God still has for you! Still Praying,Your Sister in Christ....Hannah

I wish I could grow a beard...that is my life long passion; however, Tana would disown me if i pursued that passion.

Asheville N.C.

Asheville, N.C.  Day: 30 The Earth Expedition

Hunts_House.jpg

It is so odd to me that every day I wake up I have no clue where I will be sleeping that night. On Easter a couple passed me with their family while I was on the phone (Bad trail etiquette...I am shamed)  and they looked back and saw my flag, went to my website, contacted me, set up a time to pick me up, took me to Asheville, N.C,  They invited 35 people over, I did a presentation downstairs in the basement, went to church with them, out to eat, hung out with daughter’s friends at a group called “Hesed” , that was fun….ate again…then back to the house where I would stay yet another night which places me at the dinner table where I just indulged into pancakes with peanut butter and honey. I am now nursing some tea and honey as I take my 2nd “0” day. I usually don’t take two “0” days in a row but I can almost feel my body healing over the past 24 hours with the rest.  But this oasis of rest only last until tomorrow morning when I will leave my new found family (The Hunt’s) and head back to the trail. It will be one of those bittersweet things that I should better get used to.  I just count it as blessing that I met them in the first place.

Blood: Water Mission:  The meeting with Blood:Water Mission’s  Grassroots Director Matt Ward went great back in Hot Springs, N.C.  He also brought a friend that had Thru-hiked the A.T. in 2005. We chatted over dinner as I caught up on all BWM_Guys.jpgof the new happenings of the organizations. We traded pictures and videos and talked of ways to raise support for the people of Africa through The Earth Expedition. They then offered to walk a little while with me to see me off. I offered my backpack to Matt and he accepted to carry it to gain some perspective of the expedition. I was walking through town and I felt like I had my own team of Sherpa’s with me! The trail is flat and then climbs from 1,326 ft to 2,500 ft in about 3 miles. About 3/4 of the way up the mountain Matt says “I shouldn’t have had trout for dinner” a little further and he discloses to us that he feels like he is going to vomit! Lol…. David takes the pack and finishes the rest of the mountain that ironically flattens out at the exchange.  We say out goodbye’s and they head down the mountain as I continue to press forward into the setting of the sun….. I hate walking at night!

I have heard from Thru-hikers around the fire and dinner tables that Summer Solstice day (In the northern hemisphere, the longest day of the year (near June 22) when the Sun is farthest north) marks the day on the A.T.  that is “Hike Naked Day”   That should be an interesting day… I just hope family is not visiting that day... ok.. that is just gross

Within the week I plan on being in Virginia where I will be for the next  450 miles! I have heard of the Virginia Blues but I have yet to experience them. I finally just feel like I am finding my groove. If I only had more time to write….until next time my friends  “Life to the Fullest”   Daren   Trail Name: “Vagabond”

300 miles down……1,904.5 miles to go!

300 miles down......1,904.5 miles to go until the end of Leg 1!

The honeymoon period is definitely over...  Now the rubber meets the road....or better yet ...Vibram meets the trail. Yesterday was quite the mental challenge...I walked for about 6 hours without seeing a soul....so my mind got the best of me....Everything started to catch up with me...all of the things I had to sacrifice to make this happen, the friends, memories,  and little things like showers, seats, clean water, and conversation.  I knew that I would be lonely but it finally hit me yesterday... I have come to the conclusion that memories are great but not so great when you have no one to share them with. I have been praying for a hiking companion for some time so we will just have to wait and see what happens. I am finding out that "Life to the Fullest" is not some grand adage to live life recklessly but rather a call to live life selflessly.   I am doing much better today and look forward to hitting the trail tomorrow. Never give up... never surrender! Daren_GSM_lookout.jpg

I weighed myself today only to find that I lost 10 pounds....that is crazy... I don't think the scale it 100% correct.....at least I hope it is not...I think I better go eat again...

I was doing laundry today and decided that my sleeping bag needed to be washed for it smelled like the bottom of a trash can. During the spin cycle I looked over because it was making a lot of racket only to find that feathers were flying out from under the lid! I was like "AHHH....I ran over there and took it out.... It got snagged on something and ripped a small section.... SO now it is lying outside in the sun... I hope it dries by tomorrow... or tomorrow night is going to cold night in the mountains!

I had a record day yesterday of 25 miles..... Since there is no one to compete against out on the trail I compete against myself. I am in the process of training my body to go for long periods of time for at the end of the month I want to see how far I can hike over the period of 24 hours. My hope it to make it over 40 miles.  I am thinking that northern VA will be the place I do it. The trail relatively flattens out there.

I am in Hot Springs, NC right now. The past month has been a lot of fun and I look forward to next month. One fun story is that I was walking through Gatlinburg when I heard my  name  "Daren"  I looked over only to find that It was  some friends from Indy that I made when I worked there for a couple of years. They took me to the grocery, took me back to their cabin, did laundry, showered, and then they took me out to eat. Then they took me back to the top of the mountain where I thumbed in to town earlier that morning and hiked for an hour in the dark. It was so foggy that I couldn't see but 5 feet in front of me. That is something I don't want to do anytime soon. Every shadow looked like a Bear!

I am staying the night in Hot Springs, NC. Tonight and meeting with Matt Ward from Blood:Water Mission tomorrow. They are driving from TN. Tomorrow and meeting me here. I look forward to what might unfold through our conversation.

Here is a picture I thought you might enjoy from the local laundry... I guess us Hikers sure do leave our mark on towns....

I just wanted to say that I am extremely grateful to the people who have supported me financially!

Thanks Steve and Peg Stamen, Lizzy Richardson, Jessica Blocker, Sherry Metzger, Aaron and Tana Molesky, Kelly Powe, and all of my sponsors. You are all dear to me.  Daren

Who knows when the next time I will come across a computer with WIFI access.  Until that time...Live Life to the Fullest!   Daren
