Globe to Phoenix, AZ

Globe to Phoenix: Hey everyone! Thanks for all of you that are following the Expedition. If you have been reading up in the Blog Archives you would know that I have been on hiatus for the past week letting me feet heal. My feet are in worst condition than they ever were on the Appalachian Trail. The trail offered a non repetitive hiking as opposed to the same repetitive motion of walking on pavement for an average of over a marathon a day. As a result the California/Arizona Desert have claimed 2 of my toenails and left me with 6 blisters which is something that I was not thankful  for this Thanksgiving.  Good news is that Rocko (A.T. friend) was able to take me in over the past week and allow me to let my feet heal. I have been off of them for a while and they feel and look much better. Tomorrow I will be heading out to Globe, AZ for a 100 mile test walk. I will be walking back to Phoenix, AZ to see where I am at when it comes to my body’s condition.

Thanksgiving: Thanksgiving was good to me. Rocko and some of her friends took me up to a cabin in Prescott, AZ. It was a few days off the road and with people. I think the highlight is when I drove Rocko to the E.R.. She broke up a dog fight and in the process got her hand caught under the cinch collar of the mastiff and cut her pretty good. So thanksgiving night was filled with doctors and nurses. Other  than that we were even able to go Geocacheing. If you have never been… I would check it out… Good times.

Support Vehicle: Even though we have a lot of you out there looking for us we still are on the lookout for a support vehicle for the last 2200 miles of the US. If you know of someone who is willing to donate a vehicle then please contact us daren@theearthexpedition.com

Until Next time … “Life to the Fullest” Daren

Hey Daren, It was great to hear from you! While i was reading your recent blog my heart went out to you and all the pain that your feet are giving you. But i was thinking....I can't even begin to imagine just how much pain your feet really are giving you. But think of it this way. You are walking to give a voice to all those in Africa who don't have safe drinking water and as a result they die form horrible, and painful diseases that eat them inside out. So the next time the pain in your feet seems almost unbarable think of all those that have suffered for the lack of pure drinking water. Think of all of there pain and maybe that won't make you feel your pain as much. Its just a suggestion, i don't want to make your pain seem like nothing i just want to help you see the pain form another perspective.----Praying Still, Hannah

The loneliest place on the planet...

I am convinced that the desert is the loneliest place on the planet. Everything is dry and dead and you can see nothingness for miles and miles. The heat is ridiculous out here and over the past week my right side of my body has been burned as my left is hardly even tanned as the sun has rose and set to my east. Something else I am not used to is that it is soo dry that my nose bleeds during the day and around my ankles the skin has began to blister from the heat.  I am not trying to complain… One thing that I try to do is being people along on the expedition with me so you can get a good understanding of what is going on!

Phoenix, AZ: Right now I am in Phoenix, AZ.  I didn’t walk all of the way here but wisdom said that I needed to take some time to let my feel heal of the blisters.  I was at the point where I couldn’t walk ten miles without 1,000 mg of ibuprofen….. pretty bad I know…  so I decided to take some days in Phoenix with my friend Rocko (the same Rocko from the AT) and let my body and feet heal.  Once I got here I didn’t realize how bad my feet actually were. One of my blisters was actually all of one of my toenails. I took pictures but I decided that the picture was too gross to put on the Website. It actually makes me gag when I look at it. So for two days I have been soaking my feet in Epsom salt and using rubbing alcohol on the blisters to dry them out. I should be back up and walking after Thanksgiving and should have actually walked to Phoenix by the first week of December.  I will then take a break and fly home from Phoenix  to see family for Christmas. I will return to walking after the new year…. This time with a support vehicle (can you help?)  read on..

Support Vehicle: We are still in search of a support vehicle. We have some people looking around for a vehicle for us but nothing has come to fruition just yet. We have a driver (Bryan Schlackman) but we don’t have a vehicle yet. What we are looking for is either someone to loan us their vehicle or to donate a vehicle for the remaining section of the United States. Any 4 cylinder car/truck that would allow for 2 people to sleep in would be best. We are really not that picky. If you hear of anyone that would be interested or know of any car/truck w/cap that is for sale in the price range of around $1,000 please contact us! Time is of the essence.  daren@theearthexpedition.com

Southern California: I tell you what when I think if SoCal I would never have thought of this. I miss the green and life in the surroundings. It hasn’t rained a drop since I have been walking… I don’t even know why I carry rain gear. So far my experience has been that every other car has been the Border Patrol. I am afraid that when I stay out in the desert at night I will trigger a sensor and the border patrol will come and find me or worst yet a group of illegal’s running the border will wake me up in the middle of the night. That would be a little freaky to me.  I am walking so close to the border that I see the wall that they are building.  There are still ways to get around it and the sad thing is when some of the “Coyote’s” get the group across they leave them. One Border patrol I was talking to told me that they find dead people up in the mountains all of the time. They either freeze or cook in the sun. Pretty messed up stuff regardless of how you view illegal aliens crossing into the US.

Tough Times: This past week has been very difficult for me.  It is complicated to explain but I am pretty sure that the most difficult reason that I am having out here is that there is no sense of community..no one to laugh with…no one to talk to …no one to vent frustrations to..just simply no one. I consider myself to be a spiritual man and I pray to God but I don’t believe that God ever intended his people to be out of relationships with others. In fact I know He didn’t… I guess I am learning this lesson now the hard way. This is one of the reasons that I am excited to a have a support vehicle to help out with. Not only will it provide a secure place to stay every night, lighten my pack weight, and provide water for the long stretches..it will also provide community for me. I don’t expect everyone to understand this… but I do better understand the movie “Cast Away” a lot better. I do understand the connection from Tom Hanks and “Wilson” as well… there is a lot of truth to that. None-the-less. I will continue on for I know that after the New Year it will be different.  Ok.. I am going to get something to eat now and soak my feet in the some salts again.     Take Care

(sorry no pictures this time..my computer is in Blythe, CA.)

Heading into the Yuma Desert!

Heading into the  Yuma Desert!Pacific_coast.jpg

HOT HOT HOT: Ohhh man.. I didn’t think it would be this hot out here… I was actually hoping for cooler weather… I only walked 10 miles yesterday but the sun just sucked the life out of me. I guess I am just not used to it..and because of that I got mild dehydrated. I decided to take it easy at my couchsurfing friends house today...drink a ton of water and then head out tomorrow. A friend just commented on my facebook about the irony of being dehydrated when walking for water. I only have to average 12-13 miles a day in order to reach Phoenix, AZ. by Christmas. After Christmas my plan is to haul tail to GA.

Couch Surfing friends! This is only my second Couch:Surfing experience but I have to say that I love it. Right now I am about 1,000’ from SDSU and I am staying at a house with 5 students living in it. The girls took me out to Mexican last night (I have a feeling that I am going to be eating a lot of Mexican over the next 4 months)  and then we all went to go see the new Bond movie. I figure I better see a movie now before I head out into the Yuma Desert where there is pretty much nothing.  That was followed by coming back to the house where I showed some of them the ins and outs of The Earth Expedition.  It was good. I love sharing with people what is going on over in Africa.  Most people are blown away with what is going on and also taken back how so little can make a big difference. The night ended with watching countless episodes of “The Fresh Prince”

Money Raised: I just wanted everyone to know that Kingsway Christian Jr. High Youth Group raised over $365 for Blood:Water Mission!

No Response:  So far we haven’t heard a thing from anyone who has a vehicle... I am actually kind of surprised … If you can help we would love it! Read on:

Couch_Surfing_Friends.jpgThe Expedition Needs a Support Vehicle: The Expedition is looking for anyone who has a vehicle they would be willing to donate to The Earth Expedition. We have already found someone to drive…we just need the vehicle! You might wonder why the “Walk Around the World” needs transportation. Here is the reason. As  I am walking across the United States we want to capitalize on as many speaking engagements and  get exposure in as many media outlets as we possible. The Support vehicle would allow for the driver to drive ahead to towns and set these appointments as I walk. Also the next section of the walk is very desolate and water will be scarce in many places. .The support vehicle would provide safety,  allow for quick resupply ,and allow us to capitalize on the limited daylight we have to work with. We would need the vehicle starting at the beginning of the new year for about 5 months.  If you have a vehicle that you would be willing to donate or allow The Expedition to use on loan then please contact Amie@theearthexpedition.com

GPS TRACKER: The GPS Tracker is up and working now!

Well my friends… I will update the next time that I hit up a library!

I expect to pass through this life but once. If there is any kindness or any good thing I can do to my fellow- beings, let me do it now. I shall not pass this way again.

San Diego, Cheese, Wine, Surfing, and CouchSurfing Friends

Seagull.jpgWalking Starts Tomorrow:  Well…enough play.. it is time to get down to business… I only had one thing to do today and it was go to REI and get a 2 liter and .5 liter platypus reservoir and when I went to pay for it they told me that I could use my dividends to pay! So I was like heck yeah… then they told me that they would just cash me out! Double Heck yeah… they gave me 9 bucks! I have never been paid to shop at REI before.. I am lovin that! But now I am ready to go. I am leaving from Ocean Beack Park tomorrow on my way into San Diego where I will meet another one of my CS contacts! Let walk for Africa continue!  If you remember … please pray for the expedition!

Nashville: On my way to Cali I stopped in Nashville, TN to visit Blood:Water Mission’s Headquarters. I had a good time meeting the team that operates Blood:Water. I was also in Nashville to be a part of video compilation telling a variety of stories of people who have creatively raised money using their gifts for Blood:Water and the people of Africa! I believe they Jars of Clay are going to be using it on their Christmas Tour. Pretty flippen sweet!

Cheese and Wine Party:
One of the greatest things about travelling by foot and meeting new people every day is that 1: it is cheap to do and 2: You never know what you are going to be doing or where you are going to be sleeping.  The thing is… I have never met Shannon… we both are part of an online community of who open up their homes to travelers .The site is called
www.couchsurfing.com . I contacted Shannon thought the site and asked her if she would be willing to host me this weekend.. she said it would be great and told me that she would even pick me up from the Airport. The flight was ok.. I played hearts for 2 hours straight as I was man-wiched between two huge men in the tiny seats on the plane. I am glad that I am done flying for a while. But I do have to say that the weather in San Diego is pretty sweet! It is 80 degrees outside right now as I am sitting in Shannon’s air conditioned apartment. I am not complaining by any means…. I am just coming from 40 degree cold up in Ohio! Last night I was invited to a Cheese and Wine party …. I have never been to a cheese and wine party before… I tasted Brie, Gouda, Goat Cheese,  and about 5 other types that I have never tasted before. I also have tried a wine that I have never had before and I think it is now my favorite. It is called Port wine.  Mmm..

Surf.jpgSurfin!: Today I have to say has been a great day… especially right before I start the beginning of a 6 month journey across the US. Shannon took me to La Jolla Beach where we were going to surf. I have never been surfing before so I was pretty excited for I have always wanted to. The water was pretty cold but there wasn’t a cloud in the sky and the sun was in full force. So we arrived at La Jolla pronounced La Hoya around 1:00pm.. the beach was full of sand castles, people playing football, and annoying seagulls. But the water was calling our names. Within the first 10 minutes Shannon tells me to look about 3 feet from my feet … I did only to see a sand shark swimming around…she didn’t look too concerned so I wasn’t either..she actually started to chase it. None-the-less my surfing was quite the experience.. I would stand up only to watch the board fly out from under my feet but as time passed by I was becoming increasingly better. I think I was starting to get a little cold and we were getting pretty hungry so we decided that we would ride three more and then go eat at “El Charro” which I guess is slang for Mexican Cowboy (Thanks Bekah) I wrecked on the first two and it was the last one and by that point I was pretty much done for the day and the wave came and I rode it!  I actually stayed up… it was pretty sweet! Ok.. I understand that many of you don’t care.. but it is something that I always wanted to do.

The Launch of Leg 2, ICTC, and New European Walker!

ICTC.jpgSaving Lives: Right now I am on a plane from Springfield, Il on route to Chicago, O’Hare, and then back to home base in Canton, OH.  I was in Springfield , Il for a Christian Teen Convention called ICTC.  I was there to with the Director of Blood:Water Mission  (Jena Nardella). We were asked to come and share about what Blood:Water does as well as well as inspire others to make a difference. It was a good time. There were around 2,300 students and adults at the conference and at the end of the students had raised over $10,000 for Blood:Water Mission and their work in Africa. This is just the beginning…. I have heard countless stories of youth groups who are going to go home and run campaigns of their own.  It is beautiful… High School students living outside of themselves and saving lives of people they will never meet in places most of them will never go.  That is Life to the Fullest.

Pushed Back:  The Expedition date has been pushed back a few days. The reasoning is that we were asked to come to Nashville, TN for a video shoot along with other stories of people who are running campaigns for B.W.M.  Jars of Clay will be using the video in their Christmas tour that is coming up. I will now leave on Friday as opposed to Tuesday. I am ready to go!

European Walker!
When we decided to make the change from a one man approach to a Team Movement some thought we were crazy and to be honest I wasn’t sure how easy it would be to find another walker that would be interested in doing it.  What we were asking was kind of crazy…. we want you to walk over a thousand miles, give up months of your life, leave your friends and family, use your own savings and drum up your own support, go to a foreign country where you don’t speak the language, be passionate about  Blood:Water Mission,  and do it for no monetary gain! That was what we were asking.  We were very surprised when we were contacted by 7 people that were interested. We actually had to start an interview process to figure out who would be the best suited to take The Earth Expedition Banner. We have found our man… His Name is Bryan Schlackman.. and here is a little about him.

Bryan_Schlackman_2.jpgName: William Bryan Schlackman

Nickname:  Schlack-Attack!

What city were you born in? Birmingham, AL (but grew up in BIG D! Dallas, Texas!)

Education: BS Intercultural Studies w/ emphasis in Biblical Languages from Dallas Christian College

Languages you Speak: American English, Canadian English, English English, Irish English, Welsh English, Scottish English, Jamaican English, Australian English, (even Aboriginean English), and Spanish. I know many conversational phrases from Russian and Cantonese but I don't think that counts.

Why I am walking for The Earth Expedition: I have had a passion for a long time to use my ability of running long distances to help in raising money and awareness for water purification in the world. But I also have so many great friends who have a huge passion and gift of loving and serving people and I know that they are the ones that will help me the most to encourage me, support me, and help me with every aspect of raising awareness. Without them, I wouldn't be able to do anything like this. God has blessed me with too much not to use what He has given me. Its the perfect opportunity to work together and eradicate the unclean water problem.

What was your favorite outdoor activity? Running, climbing, and soccer!

What do you like to do in your free time? Play guitar, work-out, chill with friends, play all sports, drive around in my car with the windows down listening to loud music.

When people look back at your life, how do you want to be remembered? I want to be remembered as the person that anyone could come to me for help without hesitation. They know that if they needed anything from me, I would help them. 1 John 3:16 - This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers.
