Christmas/New Year Blog!

Christmas/New Year Blog

Hello Friends: Our team hopes that all of you had a great Christmas as well as a great New Year here in a few days.  Time is sneaking up on us again as there is a little over a week before I head back out on the road again. My feet have fully recovered and I am ready to finish up the home stretch from the border of Arizona to Dahlonega, Ga. This time I am heading out with a support vehicle. Bryan Schlackman (The Earth Expedition’s European Walker) will be joining me for the last 4-5 months driving the support vehicle. Bryan will be drumming up support, media relations, training for his walk, blogging, putting together videos, and simply just being a fellow teammate so I won’t go crazy!  Bryan has already been training (check out his Blog below) and is in the process of raising funds for his European section of The Earth Expedition.

I leave again for the road on January 6th. I am flying into Dallas/Fort Worth TX. to meet with Bryan and drive over back to where I left off In Arizona. Merrell has sent me a few pairs of running shoes that fit like a glove and breathe extremely well  which I am sure will remedy the problems I have been having with blisters.  Now that I am not all by myself I think that the last 4-5 months will start to be fun again….I am excited to get back out there again!

2009: Our Team is really excited about what 2009 is going to bring. There will be a lot of first for the expedition. The first transition of a hiker as well as the first time we are sending a hiker across the sea. Although this can be very exciting….we are also very aware that the dynamics have changed.  Logistics like communications, safety, technology, language barriers and cultural differences are all going to begin to be obstacles we are going to face… and overcome.  Please pray for this transition as well as for people who can help make this dream a reality.

Support Vehicle:  We have found a support vehicle! It was a back-up plan that none of us wanted to use but Bryan allowed us to use his blazer for the expedition. It is an option that we didn’t want to use for a few reasons.. . One of the main reasons is because we want as many people as possible to be a part of this movement.  The good news is that there were many people who were on the lookout and had lobbied for the expedition to car dealers as well as car manufacturers but nothing to date has come to fruition.  So we thank all of you who took the time to speak on behalf of our need.  Thank you.

Jars of Clay Tour: It has been really cool to see the response The Earth Expedition has received through the Jars of Clay Tour. My phone and facebook have been filled with those of you who went to the Jars of  Clay “Love Came Down” Tour and saw the video that the band has put together unwrapping stories of  people who have used their gifts and in some cases just some sacrifice of some time to address the International Water Crisis.. Our Team is honored that Jars of Clay chose our story to share. Also we are honored from all of the kind words we have received from all of you who follow the expedition.

Bryan_Marathon.jpgBryan’s Blog:  So I just destroyed my body! I ran the Dallas White Rock Marathon with my buddy Jonny Harvell. It was brutal. It was warm and windy which is a bad recipe for marathon weather. Ugh. But we made it fortunately and pushed through all the obstacles. But I'm pretty sore now and it’s going to take me at least a week to recover from this. Yay. Also, on Wednesday I spoke about the Earth Expedition at a church that I used to be a youth sponsor at called Crossbend Christian Church in Plano. It was a great session for my first to speak on the subject. The kids were interested and afterward many of them came up to me with their own ideas to start campaigns with their friends and schools. I was so impressed! So I will be staying in touch with them to see if they need any help executing the campaigns. It’s going to be an amazing year I can already tell! People are really getting excited about this because they know that they can finally be a part of an organization and DO something and not just give money or pray (which isn't wrong of course). I can't wait till I get on the road with Daren! Peace.

Until Next Time  “Life to the Fullest” Daren, Bryan, and The Earth Expedition Team!

Headed home for Christmas...

Headed home for Christmas:

Website_pic_Phoenix.jpgWell wish I could say that I met my mileage goal that I had planned on reaching before Christmas came. But unfortunately due to a couple of reason I was not able to. My feet have been giving me some trouble over the past few weeks and I believe that the problem has to do with a few factors such as heat, the shoe size, repetitive motion on pavement, and different friction locations. I had built up calluses on the Appalachian Trail but they are the not in the same spots. So basically what all that means is that I decided to come home a week early and let my feet fully heal and request some new shoes and then start planning the home stretch.

My departure date is set for around the beginning of the year. I will fly back out to Phoenix using the free ticket that I got from being bumped back in March and meet up with Bryan Schlackman who will be driving the Support Vehicle (that we are still looking for) . My calculations show that I have roughly 2,000 more miles to finish up the United States portion of the Earth Expedition. That is where Bryan will take the banner and fly to Europe and start to walk his section.

Past two weeks: The past two weeks have been totally blessed by meeting Katie, Amy and  Rocko. Rocko and I met on the Appalachian Trail but I have never met Amie and Katie before. But over the past couple of week I have been staying at their house as I was waiting for my feet to heal! They have been absolutely awesome! They invited me into their lives and took me line dancing, invited me to pub nights with the girls! (I was referred to as the Y Chromosome) and made me feel like family.  I am very grateful for all of you and your hospitality.

Flight: I am back in Ohio now. I traveled yesterday from Phoenix, AZ to Atlanta GA. for my connecting flight. I think that flight took me about 4 hours. As I was up in the air at 5,000 feet I realized as we were about to land that what I just flew in four hours will take me 4-5 months to walk. I didn’t like having that though. I had a short layover in Atlanta and found myself gravitating toward smell of fried Chicken at “Popeyes”. I ordered the 3 piece, spicy with Cajun fries. About 20 minutes later that was a decision that I regretted. My stomach was churning. Mental note: don’t do that again. I then proceeded to head to my gate where I always wait to be the last on the plane. This way I can pick what seat I wanted to sit in if there where any better ones. I passed up my seat for it was a middle seat and there were already two larger men sitting in the aisle and window and I didn’t want to be in the middle of a man-sandwich so I kept walking down the row and say the most beautiful sight…..an exit row three deep with no soul around! My flight was great from Atlanta to Akron/Canton. I laid out like it was a couch… Life is good…. Until I reached Ohio and got off the plane to 23 degrees! I was in 75 degree weather that morning. I am that guy who walks off the plan in shorts and a t-shirt and hops into the car. Home for the holidays!

Website_pic.jpgSupport Vehicle: We still don’t have one. I actually thought that it would be much harder to find a person to drive the vehicle rather than find the vehicle itself. I guess I was wrong. We have not been sitting on our butts with this though. We have been in contact with some corporations and dealers but with the economy we the dealerships are not able to let anything go and we are still waiting to hear back from the major corporation. I do have to say that we have heard from a variety of people who have vehicles but they need repair before we use them. We really do appreciate the offers but The Earth Expedition is still a privately funded project and we are and always have been on a strict budget of basically just food and minimal postage and such. Even the flights have been flights that we have been able to get for free. With all that said we are still looking for anyone who might know of a vehicle that The Earth Expedition may use. If you you happen to know of a vehicle then please contact Amie@theearthexpedition.com.  Thank you!

Until next time,   “Life to the Fullest” Daren

Litmus Test for the Feet

Fire_Pic.jpgPhoenix, AZ I am still in Phoenix, Az…as mentioned in my last e-mail I was going to head out to Globe, AZ and walk the 75 miles back to Phoenix.  The 75 miles was to act as a litmus test to see where my feet were at. The first day I was able to walk 15 miles with no problem. The only problem was that the road was a windy curvy road that wound through the mountains offering little or no shoulder to walk on. This meant very close encounters with cars, trucks, and my personal favorite….the 18 wheelers that like to hug the corners which happen to be my route. I oftentimes try to walk on the other side of the guardrail only to find it frustrating trying to walk through the various types of cactus that enjoy my legs.

Day #2: Day two of the 75 miles was a little better. I had a goal of 30 miles in order to make it to the next place that offered water. I only had about 4 miles of windy road as I walked out of the mountains through a tunnel and into Superior, AZ where I loaded up on 3 liters of water, two hot dogs and a mountain dew from the Circle K. This is also where I saw my first Tarantula! (See Video) The section from Superior to Apache junction was about  26 miles away and it was hot at that low of elevation (When I woke up that morning I could see my breath and had 3 layers on) But now I had shorts and a t-shirt on and the sun began to burn my skin again. I listened to the radio that I picked up from a Phoenix station most of the day until the battery died. The day was good until about 15 miles in… My feet were a wreck again.. I didn’t even feel the hot spots until I stopped to let them dry out and to change my socks and re-tape them. When I removed my shoes and socks I found 3 new blisters to add to the count and found that I  was developing blisters under blisters.  I didn’t have any choice but to walk the remaining day. I decided that it wouldn’t be wise to continue the next day for my feet were in bad shape. I called a friend that I knew from College (Scotty Daily) and asked him if he would be able to help out. He hooked up a place for me to stay that night. He is the Jr. High Pastor in Chandler, AZ and asked me to speak to his Students about the International water crisis and share with the student’s ways in which they could help. I love the opportunities that allow me to educate and broaden the worldview of students. I speak twice tomorrow morning.

AZ_mountain.jpgFor now I am allowing my feet to heal before I head out again. I am not sure how much time that will be but I do know that I am heading home for Christmas this year. If my feet heal up I will walk some more but if not the plan is to come back out after the New Year and this time I will have a support vehicle driven by the next European walker  “Bryan Schlackman”. We will then finish up the last 2,000 miles of the United States hopefully in 4-5 months.

We still don’t have a vehicle yet. We have some feelers out but nothing has come to fruition as of yet. If you know anyone or you yourself have a vehicle that you could donate or lend to the Expedition then please contact Amie@theearthexpedition.com

Special thanks to Amy Franke, Katie Daily, and Kate Tegeler for allowing me to stay at their house as I heal.  Your generosity to the expedition has been very appreciated.  Thank you!

Until next time   “Life to the Fullest”  Daren and The Earth Expedition Team
